Ellie liked him. He seemed friendly. She caught herself staring and quickly turned away, suddenly self-conscious, and pretended to double check one of her bags. Her awkwardness wasn’t lost on Obevens, who smiled. She was different than most women he knew. Most were mindless and crass. That might not be entirely fair, but admittedly those were the women who were attracted to security guys and vice versa. Ellie was intelligent, though, and not just after a man to bring in food.

They headed out the next morning, early. All of Sal’s wives were present at the going away. They were tired, irritable looking women who seemed indifferent at his leaving. Maybe it was because he was frequently gone, or maybe they were aware he might return with another bride to feed. Two of them starting squabbling with each other, and Ellie looked away as one of them yelled, “What are you looking at?!”

Most of the security team had girlfriends, and they saw their men off. They waved gloomily as the team slowly walked their horses out the front gate. She had overheard some of the parting conversations. Some joked, others were quiet. One of them was obviously pregnant and couldn’t hide the dread she felt. The other women came around her as the team left. Ellie had seen this vary from place to place, whether women helped each other. Sometimes it was competition, distrust and intimidation.

Ellie couldn’t help but notice Obevens didn’t have anyone seeing him off. He turned to look at her. Mortified, she pretended she hadn’t been watching, but it was obvious. It was going to be a long two weeks if she couldn’t get it together.

The first few days were uneventful. She spent most of the time staring at the horizon or studying the topography of the mountains. It was beautiful and frightening at the same time. Obevens had been right. The walls had been a continual presence in her life, making her feel safe. Without them she felt exposed, helpless, like there was nowhere to run. Really, though, there were too many places to run. She had no idea which direction to go.

They followed the old highways, with two men forward, one at the rear, and one on each flank to make sure nothing snuck up on them. Obevens stayed with Sal and Ellie and tried not to kill Sal, who wouldn’t shut up. Finally, after two days of being ignored, he quieted, and they were able to ride in peace.

Their days were spent finding water sources, hunting for game, and avoiding predators, and their nights spent sleeping under the stars. Ellie saw why this life was desirable to the security team. There was a lot of freedom. Every day was something new, and there was nothing to answer to except the threats, which had been few. The men were well armed, with automatic rifles, pistols, and hand weapons, though, so she wasn’t too concerned.
